Texas Transportation Commission
Austin, TX - Tues, Aug. 30, 2022
Texas Transportation Commission members approved the 2023 Unified Transportation Program (UTP), a 10 year statewide plan (2023-2032) for transportation project development.
Included in the UTP is the North Houston Highway Improvement Project (NHHIP) which the Greater Tomball Area Chamber of Commerce strongly supports.
Bruce Hillegeist, GTACC President, along with other area Chamber colleagues attended the August 30 Texas Transportation Commission meeting and spoke in favor of the approval of the UTP.
The Tomball Chamber followed the lead of the Greater Houston Partnership and agreed that major improvements to I-45 from Downtown Houston north to FM 1960 is desperately needed for various reasons including the fact that much of I-45 in the NHHIP is old, first opened from Downtown Houston to Spring in 1963.
And, an improved I-45 would address traffic safety concerns, mobility efficiency, flood mitigation and disaster evacuation needs.
Also, the Port of Houston is the #1 Port in the US (ranks 1st in total tonnage) and I-45 is a vital corridor for the transport of products and goods to and from the Port.
Texas and Houston are seeing substantial population growth, as are the surrounding areas, north and northwest of Houston in particular.
The Tomball Chamber’s vision and outreach is regional—Tomball area residents use I-45 for work and leisure destinations oftentimes.
Estimated total project cost is $9.7 billion.
