What To Do If You Find Kittens

Forum Image

It is that time of year again!

The Montgomery County Animal Shelter is starting to see kittens come into the shelter.

As MCAS starts preparing for an influx of kittens in the next months, they will again need your help and commitment to lifesaving.

We can all work together to make the best decisions for our community’s homeless kittens – please note that the best decision often isn’t to bring kittens to the shelter.

There is no better caretaker to a kitten than his or her mother.

It is critical to keep kittens with their mothers until they are around 8 weeks old.

If needed, it is safe to bring 8-week-old kittens to the shelter to be adopted into loving homes.

However, fosters will be greatly needed at times when the shelter runs out of room to house healthy kittens and when pregnant cats and kittens who are sick and injured are in need of extra, in-home care.

MCAS hopes this information will help you decide what to do if you come across stray kittens.

Please help MCAS save lives as they begin the start of kitten season.

@TheWoodlandsTXDotCom :

So sad many cats and babies...I might try and foster a kitten during this busy time..have to get some advise from an expert as my Siamese has a mean streak if she doesn't like a cat ..plus she doesn't like playing and that's what kittens love.

The lady that helped trap all those at the gas station I feed, asked if I would help foster a kitten as they get overwhelmed right now....need to ask more questions though,Serena is a bit psycho ...though she was a good mother once but also feral....we will see.

@Starlight13 : She would have to be separated from Serena unless you are supervising. We had tons of kittens when I was growing up and we always kept separated until they were big enough to interact safely with our other cats and kept in until big enough to be around our dogs outside.

@DEEDEE8 :

She fixed four and had to take a break as the others were getting trap shy,I need to ask if she has completed it.....I fed them all last night,they are so cute,they were excited to get wet food....I wish I could take them all,it's not a safe place for them on another websiteykendahl ...but the gas station guys also feed them and are really a kind crowd...they are not true ferals more like lost or dumped cats...I put their pics on FB but no owners came forward.
It's not a bad idea for people who lose their cat to go and look in feral colonies to see if they are there.

@Starlight13 : Glad they are at least cared for and hopefully no one is mean to them. They are a really cute group of cats.

I have read stories where people will sometimes find their cats in cat colonies. Cat colonies are more common in public places. I think it is less common in neighborhoods.

There is lady who is trying to fix 100 community cats...they have captured 45...16 entered adoption programs and one was returned to its owner.....

I would keep the kitten away from Serena if I do it...maybe foster and older one...still thinking about this....

@Starlight13 : Wow.....is that in TW? I love that 16 are getting homes, just wish it was even more. And one returned to his owner....that is so awesome!!! Love that!!!

Yes fostering kittens is a great thing, I have never done it because my girl did not like other cats. Billy would like them too much lol.

@Starlight13 : That is good but still a shame because some will come out of their shell with time and work. But some may not.

@DEEDEE8 :

I agree but I think ferals need a lot more attention and time to tame them...there are not enough dedicated people to do this,..especially if you are trying to fix 100 cats as this person is.... 😢. There are a few that work with ferals to tame them but not enough.....then when you tame them you have to get them adopted,..then you find they have to be shipped out to states that really want them....it must be a terribly difficult situation for these beautiful souls that are trying to solve the problem of homeless cats....it's overwhelming if you think about it.

@Starlight13 : All very true. With those kind of numbers it would be impossible to find enough that are willing to work with them. And very often people that take them let them outside too soon because that is what the cat wants and is used to, and are relentless about going out. The cat bolts and they never see it again. Best to leave in the area they are used to unless you really have the time and patience to try to make it work.

Great work they are doing to neuter and spay to try and stop the cycle.
