[by Doug Sarant]

In team athletics there are leaders by example and then you have born leaders. Born leaders not only lead by example, they actively seek out opportunities to make the team better and better throughout a season. Whether it be a simple pat on the back to a teammate that needs a boost or to tell a teammate to straighten out who is dragging the team down. It doesn't stop on the athletic field. Operating with character on and off the field are musts as well.

We think we have the total package today for our holiday special profile in senior football captain Quinn Binney.

How did lacrosse and football win out as your sports of choice?

I've been playing lacrosse since I was in third grade. This spring will be my 9th year in the sport. I became interested in lacrosse when I quit baseball in 2nd grade. I needed a spring sport to replace baseball. One day, my dad came home from work with a new lacrosse stick. The following weekend, he took me to watch the annual mudslinger tournament at SCFL. I fell in love with the sport immediately and I knew I wanted to be a part of it.

I played basketball for a while and ran track in 7th and 8th grade but lacrosse and football were my favorites hands down. Football and lacrosse compliment each other greatly.

What do you think The Woodlands chances are to win state this year in lacrosse?

The unique thing about this year's TWHS team is that we have an abundance of upperclassmen. The past three years, we have had a ton of kids in the 2018 class getting significant playing time at the D1 varsity level, so we have lots of experience. I believe this is the most talented class the Woodlands has ever had. We have no excuse not to win the state championship. I enjoy playing for the Woodlands because there's really good friendships on the team and I love spending time with my coaches and teammates.

Have you enjoyed your time at TWHS?

I love attending the Woodlands High School. I have never had a class or teacher that I disliked. The academics are fantastic and the athletics are very impressive. There are few other high schools in the U.S. that offer such an outstanding combination of academics and athletics.

What will you be doing after you graduate?

From the time when I was much younger, I was very interested in attending West Point and serving in the U.S. Army for many reasons. First, my family has had a long tradition of attending West Point and my brother is currently a sophomore there right now. I wanted to serve in the Army because I would like to offer something for my country. The U.S. has given me everything I could have ever wanted, so I feel like I need to return the favor. Also, I've been given the opportunity to play Division 1 collegiate lacrosse at West Point, which is something I've dreamed about since I started playing the sport. Coach Alberici has constructed a fantastic lacrosse program at Army West Point, and I can not wait to be a part of it next year. I'll hopefully major in mechanical engineering and find a career in that field.

What do you do away from high school and sports?

Apart from school and sports, I love to read. I also like spending time with my family.

Do you have a role model for lacrosse?

My role model for lacrosse is my older brother, Connor. He was a really good captain on the team two years ago and I looked up to him.

How about a role model for football?

My role model for football is Coach Bartolozzi. He's the safeties coach at TWHS. Coach Bart is one of the smartest and most optimistic men I've ever met. He is a genius when it comes to defensive playcalling, and a really good friend.

Talk about how supportive your family has been in everything you do.

I have been blessed with a very supportive family. I cannot recall a single game that I have played in when one of my parents weren't watching. They give me all the support and help that I need in order to be successful.

If you could donate a million dollars to any charity, which one would be the lucky beneficiary?

If I was given a million dollars to give to any charity: I would give my 1 million to breast cancer research. I have lost family members to breast cancer and I have seen the effects of it first hand.

Three things people don't know about you:

1. I've been stung by a sting ray
2. I've torn my ACL
3. I'm good at making cookies

When is the last time you danced?

Last time I danced was Homecoming in October. I like to think that I'm pretty good, but I'm sure my girlfriend would disagree.

Your favorite song?

I don't really have a favorite song but my favorite artist is Travis Scott.

Favorite movie of all time?

My all-time favorite film is the Star Wars saga. I'm a huge star wars fan.

TWHS D-1 head lacrosse coach Keith Tintle chimed in regarding Quinn;

"Quinn has been on the D-1 squad for all four years. In those four years he has grown on and off the field exponentially. He has that edge that parents dream about their kids having. The mere idea of losing almost makes Quinn barf. As is mostly the case for athletes in possession of that edge, Quinn had to learn early on that a team player has got to be positive at all times and to never get so mad after making a mistake that it negatively effects your play for the rest of the game. He learned to shrug it off and say "What's next?" When he learned this his leadership skills kicked in big time. It has been a pleasure to coach Quinn and we'll miss him greatly."

Coach "T" is the kind of coach that tells it like it is and he sugar coats nothing. If you have thin skin, you would not have fun playing for him. However, if you stick it out you develop a mental toughness that will serve you well after your time at TWHS has come and gone. Quinn had to learn this early on and he did so fairly quick. It's to the point now that he relishes Coach T's critique. He actually smiles when he's the target now which is good for the younger players to see.

I can see Quinn at boot camp now. The Drill Sergeant will be walking the line inspecting his new troops not too unlike in An Officer and a Gentleman" with Louis Gossett, Jr. It'll be Quinn's turn to get berated...
"What's your name boy?"
Quinn Binney, Sir!"
"Don't you eyeball me, boy!
SIR YES SIR!
"Where you from Quinney?!"
The Woodlands, Texas, Sir!
"Did you say Texas, Sweet Pea?"
SIR YES SIR

Look for Quinn and the lacrosse team to be fighting for that very elusive state championship trophy this spring. If they succeed for the first time ever, there will be milk and cookies baked by Quinn for everyone.

I have always wanted to play Lacrosse. It looks like so much fun, something I would enjoy. I really enjoyed playing football and setting records for McCullough High School back in the day.
