Meet TWHS Cheerleader Alana Johnson

[by Doug Sarant]

Growing up in a suburban Massachusetts town, we had our share of young people getting into trouble...including me. The excuse coming from the parents of the perpetrators usually sounded something like this, "There just isn't enough to do in our town so kids go out and get in trouble." I look back on that as such a lame excuse because there was much to do in regards to town activities. Every situation is different, so you could put blame on the parents, the kids, the town, etc... The main culprit is the kid though. In the end, the activities were out there to be taken advantage of.

You hear that same excuse here in The Woodlands as well, and I'm here to tell you that it's just a bunch of barnyard fertilizer! Our subject today immerses herself in so many activities she probably wouldn't know what to do with any free time, if on the rare occasion any actually did come along.

Meet Alana Johnson, the multi-tasking senior from TWHS, in this edition of TheWoodlandsTX.com Profile of the Week:

How long have you been Cheerleading? How did you become interested in Cheer? Describe the difference between high school cheer and select cheer. What other sports did you play growing up and why did Cheer win out? What other activities are you involved in?

I began ballet lessons when I was two years old! Then gymnastics when I was four participating in both competitively on our team "Flips Force" and at Dance Dynamics "Sparklers" team. I loved both but soon chose dance and began performing in the Nutcracker at Boni's Dance and Performing Arts and joined Boni's En Toure competitive team at age nine. As soon as I entered junior high I joined McC (McCullough) cheer team and became Co-Captain with Carly (Wheeler) and have been for the past six years. I have been so fortunate to be able to be a part of both my high school cheer squad and Boni's dance program as both allow me to experience different loves of mine.

Describe the 2016 TWHS Cheerleading squad. Why do you enjoy cheering for TWHS?

My cheer squad at TWHS is amazingly talented and leaders in our school and community. We get along so well and are such good friends in and outside of cheer. We are all also involved in other extracurricular activities such as National Charity League, National Honor Society and Woodlands Elite. Coach Spears (Wendy Cones Spears), the TWHS Varsity coach, is an exceptional coach and always goes above and beyond for our team. We are so thankful for her and our parents who make this program successful.

Do you like TWHS and why?

TWHS is truly the best high school. It has offered me outstanding academic growth with AP classes, fine arts and teachers that have so much dedication. I feel extremely prepared for the future as I apply to colleges. TWHS has given me the best high school experience I could have ever asked for.

What colleges are you looking into attending? Do you know what your field of study will be?

I am applying to Texas colleges : SMU, Baylor, A & M and The University of Texas. Out of state: Chapman University, Clemson University, University of North Carolina and NYU. I hope to pursue my dance studies and business or natural science.

What do you hope to be doing after you graduate from college?

I would love to share my love of dance to others in instruction or performance. Also, I would love to dance in a company or work in a dance studio after college.

What do you enjoy doing away from school and Cheer?

I love to watch Netflix and relax when I'm not doing homework or going to dance. I also enjoy spending time at the lake or beach with my family and friends.

Who is your role model for Cheer or dance?

I have been blessed by my role model Katie Schaible Dearman. She grew up in The Woodlands and after earning her degree from SMU has returned to our studio (Boni's). She performs at Dance Ad Deum. She is truly an inspiration to me and I admire her dedication and love for everything she does and her kind, loving personality.

Describe how supportive your family is in everything you do in your life.

My family has supported me in all my endeavors, even when I tried acting and was Susan Walker in the Miracle of 34th Street! They are my #1 fans in everything I do and I am thankful for such an encouraging family.

If you were given a million dollars and had to give it to one charity, which one would you choose and why?

I would donate the money to cancer research. One of my very close family friends has recently just been diagnosed with stomach cancer at age 19 and it is heartbreaking watching what this family has to go through. I would love to further cancer research so one day cancer is an illness of the past.

Five things that people don't know about you.

I can do a four leaf clover with my tongue. I love to watch Netflix especially greys anatomy and scandal. I dance everyday of the week except Tuesdays. My favorite ice cream flavor is Coffee. I cut my forehead open while wake surfing behind our boat last summer and my dad stitched it while I laid on our kitchen table.

TWHS Cheer Coach, Wendy Spears talked about Alana:

"Alana is one of the sweetest girls you will ever meet, and she is an unbelievable dancer and cheerleader. She has something special about her in that she can just bring the team together whenever needed. I can't wait to see what he future holds for her."

There is much to be impressed with when the subject is Alana Johnson. You'll find many impressive kids here in The Woodlands/Oak Ridge area with whom can be described as wise beyond their years. The key ingredient with these young people is how they are just as comfortable with adults as they are with their peers. They're mature enough to realize when speaking and interacting with adults that no mixed signals are being sent and/or received. It's called maturity and Alana is all that.

Ya know, this is the fourth cheer related article we've composed this fall... and In all four we've made it a point to recognize how cheerleaders are indeed athletes. Not only that but also how tough as nails they are. We saw TWHS cheerleader, Kendall Mueller get upended by fellow classmate and running back, Christopher Stewart. I mean this girl went up a-- over tea kettle! I felt bad for laughing right when this happened but she got right back up...and before Stewart, I might add.

As for Alana, she described how she was injured while wake surfing. Her father, whom may or not be in the medical field stitched her up on the kitchen table and she was right back at it. I'm hoping her Dad is not a doctor because it just makes for a cooler story.

Either way, I'd feel safe going to war with Alana by my side...or any cheerleader for that matter. Emoticon

It's great to have some interviews of athletes. Hopefully, we will get some representatives of other sports as well.
