My new "Butterfly Garden"

Forum Image

I finally got my own "Butterfly Garden" with plants bought at a Farmer's Market over the weekend- including nectaring plants, sage, milkweed, and other items. I've always wanted such an area and am excited about what I was able to create over the past few early mornings. It has been beautiful working in the early morning before it got hot, listening to all the birds, etc. Just wanting to share my joy with my neighbors.

@HiHoNeighbor : That is so nice. I had three butterfly bushes that would attract hundreds of gorgeous butterflies but I think they have been killed in the freeze. I am cautiously optimistic. If they don't return I will be out gardening. Have a blessed day.

On the right is what remains of my aloe Vera "grove" after much died and became diseased from the Great Freeze. But I cleaned it up a bunch while making the butterfly garden space. I like the result!

Caterpillar hair can be a cause of human health problems. Caterpillar hairs sometimes have venoms in them and species from approximately 12 families of moths or butterflies worldwide can inflict serious human injuries ranging from urticarial dermatitis and atopic asthma to osteochondritis, consumption coagulopathy, kidney failure, and brain bleeding. Skin rashes are the most common, but there have been fatalities. Lonomia is a frequent cause of envenomation in Brazil, with 354 cases reported between 1989 and 2005. Lethality ranging up to 20% with death caused most often by intracranial hemorrhage.

So make sure your butterflies are caterpillar free (neuter them before you let them in).

@HiHoNeighbor : That looks great! You will have many happy butterflies ! πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹

I've just moved here and our house has a huge landscaped area in the front, all dead, except for a couple of very hardy rose bushes. Now it's just a big brown island of dirt lol.
I went to home depot and can't believe how expensive there plants are, and how few choices they have. I'm planning to go by Lowe's this weekend, but would really like to hit up a couple of local nurseries or farmers/flea markets. Do you have any suggestions where I could get a lot of plants and a few bushes, for a cheap price???

@LynnMarie : Go take a peek at Houston garden centers over by 1488 on the east side of the freeway. I went there about a month ago and the selection was phenomenal.

@cabeuser : Thank you so much!
This space we have out front is huge and I honestly done have the $$$ to spend right now. But my granddaughter absolutely loves butterflies and I promised we would plant lots of "fwowers" πŸ˜†. I'll definitely go by there tomorrow! 🌸

@DEEDEE8 : Consider it as another addition to the already long "allergens" list...

Only doing milkweed for monarchs only. Have seen more than 6 caterpillars on one small plant and they have eaten all the leaves. Had to go and purchase more plants to them hungry caterpillars.

@HiHoNeighbor : Yep, I realize that I lost myself also after visiting homedepot and Lowe's. πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ€£ maybe I haven't planted anything in awhile, but my goodness, plants are more expensive than I thought. . πŸ™„ The home I left in Florida had a very established garden and it never freezes there.lol.
There is always that one nursery/garden center that has really healthy plants at inexpensive prices. I'm just looking for that place ☺️
