BUFFET RELOCATION

I put the food closer to the door and this little guy comes closer. Doesn't seem to mind me taking photos of him/her.

@Amber : If the squirrel doesn't mind you being close, that means the squirrel is getting use to you. That is not good. Squirrels have bitten humans who have become habituated to humans.

@sa1111 : I'm not wanting to get to the point of trying to pet it. Just like to watch them.

@Amber : I'm only being honest when stating this. Even if you are not trying to pet it, it can still become habituated to humans. Not good for that animal or humans. Many people feed wildlife animals unintentionally or intentionally, then the animal ends up not fearing humans anymore and they get killed. Many people hate squirrels because they damage property. The best thing is not to feed wildlife. They are able to take care of themselves without humans helping them. If people care about wildlife animals, don't feed them.

I feed the birds and the squirrels. Used to feed a fox, too. Most people feed these creatures.

People feeding them is doing no good. Education is key.

From a wildlife rehabilitation center, "Of course this is not something that's always in our control when we are aware of others who are feeding wild animals. When wild animals become accustomed to human food, they gather around humans and search out that food. Studies have shown this to be detrimental to their proper growth & over all health as well as causing horrific dental decay. This always puts them in danger. If you know of someone who is feeding the wild animals and you cannot persuade them to stop, try and at least get them to feed in a natural wooded area rather than at the human buildings or within their human communities.
What most people assert is that they love animals & want to help them, but in fact they are being selfish by trying to create relationships with wild animals who need to fear people. None of us live forever, so what happens to a family of animals after we pass, or move away? Most likely either neighbours or the new owners will feel very differently about them."

Years ago I fed birds and squirrels, then inadvertently fed opossums, raccoons, mice, etc. One day a big raccoon almost ran into my house during the day, they got very assertive and scary. The squirrels were pushy at times but I was not afraid of them....they were just too fast for me at times lol. They came into a back room/ add-on enclosed area and got nuts out of a bucket and one came on inside one day and scared me and I scared him and he ran back out. We had names for them and everything. I miss it but could not keep up with the demand, plus we moved. Did not start that at our new house when we moved in 2004.

I also almost hand fed the titmouse birds and the chickadees. They were so small and cute!! We had so many cardinals and blue jays until that blue jay virus was killing them off. Depends where you live but we do not have near the birds we had before. Was long ago and a different area, plus we were feeding them tons of food. I know now it is not good for them and no longer do it, but it sure was fun!!!!

@Starlight13 : But they are so adorably cuteee!!!! Too many people there and feeding them. Not quite as bad as one person feeding them, but we did have some get aggressive to each other at times, which I did not like.

However I dont think you should not stop people enjoying your photos and people enjoy feeding wild life .. our posts always lead to more discussions thats the nature of it, I and others can get off topic at times, not meaning to hurt people's feelings.. it's like table chatter with no people, you dont know where it leads to..keep posting they are always beautiful interesting photos.
