Commissioners Court Approves New Rayford Road Early Voting Location

Voting for more than 45,000 Montgomery County residents just got easier and more accessible with the addition of a new early voting location in a rapidly growing community.

On Tuesday, Commissioners Court approved the addition of Generations Church, located at 405 Rayford Road, as a polling place for early voting in the upcoming Road Bond election April 27-May 5. The measure was approved by County Judge Craig Doyal, Commissioners Meador, Riley and Clark. Precinct 3 Commissioner James Noack was absent from the regularly scheduled meeting.

Public comments before the vote were overwhelmingly favorable to the addition of the new early voting site and passage of the proposed road bond.

"We have so many people in our neighborhoods on the east side of South County who are interested in their government and their schools and who want to vote," said Paul Cote,  president of the Rayford Road Civic Association. "The Rayford Road site will make it easier and more practical for those east of Interstate 45."

Despite enormous growth  in the area, voting in the area has remained uncharacteristically low. Cote attributes this to traffic congestion, particularly at peak travel times, and early voting locations inconvenient for area residents.

"Having an early voting location in this heavily populated area was always logical, it just never happened," said Cote. "An early voting site on this side of the community has been sorely needed."

Suzie Harvey, Montgomery County Elections Administrator, confirmed that the Rayford Road area has historically had relatively light turnout for early voting compared to the rest of the county.

The election in which early voters at the Rayford Road site can cast their ballots is for the 2015 Road Bond, a $350 million bond featuring 77 projects throughout the county supported by the Keep Montgomery County Moving group.

"The largest of the projects is a $60 million expansion of Rayford Road and a railroad overpass," said Keep Montgomery County Moving treasurer and Oak Ridge North resident Joe Michels. "This election is important to all residents of Montgomery County, especially those in Precinct 3."

Approval of the new Rayford Road voting location was long and complicated, said Donna Wick, Keep Montgomery County Moving publicist and media strategist. "Multiple sites were evaluated and considered by our team before the final selection was brought before Commissioners Court."

"I live on the east side of I-45 and know how excited the people over here will be to have this easy and convenient early voting location," said Wick. "We won't be on the low end of the continuum for early voting in May. I can almost guarantee it."

Early voting in the 2015 Road Bond runs from April 27 to May 5 prior to the traditional election date of Saturday, May 9. For election information, visit www.mctx.org. For information on the road bond, visit www.KeepMontgomeryCountyMoving.com.
