Magnolia Gets Its Own Small-Town Radio Station - The Woodlands

Magnolia has a small-town feel and now its getting its own small-town radio station.

Welcome, Backyard Radio. Backyard Radio will operate at 103.5 on your FM radio dial beginning October 15, 2014. Using the call letters KYBY-LP, Backyard Radio is a non-profit community radio station that touts itself as your alternative to big city radio, and will serve Magnolia and its surrounding communities. The Backyard Radio KYBY-LP radio tower will be centrally located within the city limits of Magnolia, thanks to an agreement with the City of Magnolia.

Magnolia is such a fast growing and progressive area and its perfect for new businesses. Backyard Radio will be a part of this growth,"said Backyard Radio President Cheryl Conley, who is extremely excited about bringing a community radio station to Magnolia.

Last fall the FCC opened an application window for new, low-power community FM stations. Backyard Radio had long awaited this window and immediately submitted its application. Conley has spent a good portion of her life working in radio and has lived in the Magnolia/Montgomery area for over 20 years.

Weve been planning for this for years, and we were one of the lucky ones who were granted permits in the first wave in late January. Conley said Non-profit community radio is a lot different than commercial radio. We will raise station revenue through memberships, sponsorships, and donations. Instead of playing the same 30 songs over and over like many commercial stations, Backyard Radio will draw from a wide variety of musical genres and artists, interspersed with entertaining and informational programming.

Backyard Radio will offer a mixture of local programming everything from community news to public affairs, including national news stories which may affect the area. Backyard Radio will also provide local high school sports coverage. Additionally, Backyard Radio will broadcast local church services and inspirational music on Sunday mornings.

Backyard Radio will provide a service to people we currently cant reach otherwise. I think it will be really good, said Magnolia Mayor Todd Kana. There will be a great benefit, above and beyond that of a normal radio station, in our ability to get information out to the public. Additionally, KYBY-LP is offering a block of time to the Magnolia high schools in order to give students a real taste of what radio is like. Students will be able to create and broadcast their own radio programs.

Its Magnolias station, as well as ours, Conley said. Backyard Radio is commercial-free and will operate with paid staff and volunteers. The radio station is actively seeking contributing members, program sponsors, community volunteers, programming suggestions and anchor underwriters to help the station reflect the true character of Magnolia.

Magnolia is a home-town community more than most, said Charlie Riley, who has been in charge of operations for Montgomery County Precinct 2 for almost 12 years, and recently was elected to the Precinct 2 commissioners spot. When there is someone in need, a fundraiser or a benefit, the whole town and community come together. When the wildfires came through, we had people from all over the state trying to help, but local people went above and beyondhelping the firemen, getting supplies, providing food and drinks to everybody that needed them. You dont see that in a whole lot of places.

Backyard Radio will bring the close-knit Magnolia community to the airwaves.
