Summer is the time to hit the open road - literally. Families all across
America are making pilgrimages to top US tourist destinations by car,
van or RV.
There is just something great about the thrill of
the open road and the scenic sights and spontaneous stops, said Brett
Grabner, chief operating officer of Leisure Getaways Incorporated in
Spring. With airfare prices typically spiking in the summer, a road trip
can be a perfect travel option.
The US Travel Association
reported that in 2012, nearly eight in 10, or 79 percent, of leisure
trips were by car. Even though gas prices are on the rise due to the
current Iraqi conflict, frugal families can still take an affordable
road trip. According to WalletHub, a personal finance web site, the top
five states for road trips are Idaho, Minnesota, Oregon, Utah and
Washington. The group ranked all 50 states based on several variables
including gasoline prices, national parks, attractions, weather and
accommodations.
If these states arent on your list of places to
visit or within your budget, Grabner suggests taking a weekend road
trip. The Houston metro area is a just a few hours away from some great
destinations including Corpus Christi, South Padre Island and Galveston
beaches as well as Austin, said Grabner.
No matter where you
are heading, here are some things to consider before getting behind the
wheel: budget carefully, search the best deals on lodging before you hit
the road and choose your destination according to your budget. Right
now, there are so many helpful websites, including leisuregetaways.com,
which make it easy for travelers to find the best values for
accommodations and other important items such as cheapest gas prices,
scenic routes and average weather conditions, said Grabner.
Since
you wont be able to take a road trip without your vehicle, Grabner
recommends servicing your car before leaving. The Automobile Club of
America estimates that it will come to the rescue of 7.9 million
stranded motorists between Memorial Day and Labor Day, so equip your
vehicle for emergencies by storing jumper cables, flares, emergency
cones and a first aid kit.

trip destinations or another spectacular vacation experience at any time
