Reasons why genetic health testings is what matters and counts when it comes to the quality of a dog, not looks. If for some reason you or you know someone who wants to purchase from a breeder, make sure extensive research is done! The same thing goes on with the American Kennel Club. They require no genetic health testing for show dogs and the best of breed winners can be riddled with genetic diseases.

Owners/fanciers of these breeds might especially want to watch:

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Rhodesian Ridgeback
German Shepherd
Boxer
Pug
Basset Hound
Dachshund
Mastiff
English Bulldog
Pekingese

Yeah they are livestock guardian dogs and not as popular and extremely over-bred as the listed breeds. The amount of hair, size, and independency in the breed will usually turn people off of them..which isn't necessarily a bad thing They do have a good amount of health problems and concerns though, mostly due to their size.

Great post Jamie

Isn't it sad? I am appalled at the responses by the ridgeback breeders, the responses by the Crufts judge Terry who says the show dog is the correct version when the GSDs can hardly walk on their deformed back legs, when the founder of the GSD breed way back when stated "german shepherd breeding is working dog breeding, or it is not german shepherd breeding." There is no way those show GSDs could do the jobs GSDs were bred and meant to do. Then they catch the kennel club's health & information manager in so many lies and hypocrisy.

sick sick sick.

It't terribly sad and very sickening indeed!

I've known for years that NOT all breders are reputable, even some of the ones who breed show dogs. I have personal experience with one particular one that just made me sick sick sick

I also know the AKC is a joke, sadly

Yeah I just hate how so many people have the mentality that if a dog has AKC papers and has champions and grand champions in its pedigree it is a quality dog. People are just so clueless. It is just insane how that pug in the video could have taken best of breed if he was entered into the show despite his major and deadly genetic health problems.

mutts make the best dang dogs in my experience.
how ever Bree (our Great Pyr.) is causing doubt as she is great and not any mutt in her that I am aware of.
OK, except for the chewing our bed spread part (on our fourth one now), but we all have faults.

I used to work with a vet who used to actually advise clients to buy Cavaliers because she knew in time their decision would most likely generate better than average income for the clinic. MUCH of what this woman did was (IMHO)very questionable. That particular place also would not offer free first time exams for shelter dogs (which I had suggested) because the owner (another vet) didn't see a point in attracting clients with pets who had already been s/n! Then in the same conversation another employee mentioned puppy mills to which the owner replied "puppy mills are simply seen in a negative light due to conflicting views on animal walfare."
I could MAYBE see the point on shelter dogs IF the practice was VERY busy. The point of running ANY business is to make money and even though his statement still wouldn't be PC it would make sense from a business perspective. However, the place wasn't busy AT ALL and it would cost nothing for a Dr to get off the internet and give a free exam and possibly sell some ear meds or whatever.

Sorry for the rant...its just annoying.
