I encourage you to research him. The media might throw around terms like "fiscal hawk" and "Tea Party darling", but if you look at his record, he's for big spending.
Romney has plumped for ideology over regional politics. By choosing an icon of extreme monetary conservatism, he is trying to improve his chances throughout the country. The alternative was to choose a running-mate who would help him in a particular critical area (e.g. Rubio/Florida.)
Given that his numbers are eroding in all the "battleground" states, I think that this is his only call. He needs help EVERYWHERE.
However, I doubt that it will work. First, most people simply do not support Ryan's economic extremism and, second, even were Romney to gain by association with an arch-conservative, it wouldn't overcome the negative perception of his character that is growing daily. The electorate will not trust a candidate whose behavior (in his refusal to release his tax returns) have caused them to believe that he is a manipulative sneak.

If you look at the polling data (http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2012/president/us/general_election_romney_vs_obama-1171.html), you will note that Romney's numbers began to plummet just after Harry Reid's accusation about his non-payment of income taxes.
The electorate's judgment is that Romney's continuing refusal to release his tax returns doesn't pass the smell test, regardless of political affiliation.
Ryan's selection as a running-mate won't change that perception.

I hope people aren't listening to Harry Reid. He's not one I would want to get my information from. He's a hypocrite.
Paul Ryan is too "way off the charts" for most people. It is interesting, those on Medicare, at the moment, are rooting for someone who wants to eliminate it for a voucher system. How far, in this rising insurance rates, do you think a voucher would go? No one has said what the dollar amount of the voucher would be. Just a visit to the ER is very expensive.
And, all those people that have paid into Social Security all their lives, do they get a refund? He is wanting to eliminate that, as well.
That's ok, give me what I put into SS and I will invest it elsewhere. I wouldn't mind that. I don't think legally it can be eliminated without some compensation to those who paid it.
