The YMCA is going to be starting their Operation Backpack this next week. Donations of school supplies and backpacks are needed for the kids in our communities who can not afford these things. Several businesses in the community are drop off sites including the one that I work for. If you would like to donate, please private message me and I will tell lyou where to drop the items off. Thanks for your help!
Staples often has good deals everyday. I don't have kids at home to buy for but I buy lots of supplies for my classroom and I keep lots of extras for those kids whose families can't afford supplies.
You wouldn't believe how many pens and pencils I go through every year!! Kids never have supplies even those whose parents can afford it seem to never have their writing utensils!!!
I give out a lot of spirals too, some kids just barely can afford the pack the school puts together and sometimes it just doesn't have everything we need to have a successful class. Sometimes I can find them for 10 cents.
All of the YMCAs are doing Operation Backpack. The company that I work for is taking collections at three of the sites, Sterling Ridge (Woodlands), Spring, and BarkerCypress. There are other businesses that are collection sites. We hope that we can fill our collection container!

How do they determine people in need? It seems that the Y's around here would not have that many people who need supplies.
sstonetx... the YMCA in this area helps many people not just in The Woodlands proper. There are outreaches to Tamina, Magnolia, Conroe, and other areas surrounding us. I have been a volunteer for the Partners of Youth program with the YMCA for many years. We do have people in need in our community. When tradegy happens or a crisis like Enron, the YMCA steps up to help provide child care for people needing jobs. They assist in providing fitness programs and activities for low income seniors. There are special programs for girls to learn about self esteem. Our YMCAs do so much more than just youth sports!
Remember we do have subsidized housing in The Woodlands area. Subsidized housing feeds into Glen Loch Elem, Hailey Elementary and I believe Holly Creek Apts are subsidized too so that includes Ride Elementary. That means we do have poverty level people in The Woodlands. Also think about the families off Tamina Rd, just because they are collecting in the Woodlands does not mean they are just helping in this area.
You are correct about the subsidized housing. Fawn Ridge, Holly Creek are both and there are at least three subsidized housing developments off Panther Creek. There are others that I can not remember.
There can be people in need anywhere. Residents of the Woodlands can lose their jobs, have illness bring havoc or just be lousy managers of their finances. the Woodlands is not immune to financial difficulty.
Wedgewood or something like that off Tanglebrush is another. People look at the Woodlands and think "rich". But in reality look at the houses in the Woodlands, there are a some high priced homes but the majority of the homes are middle class price range and we do have low income housing in the older developments.

Magnolia, Conroe, and Shenandoah areas.
