UKMatt, you have to realize how divided this country has been. The Conservatives believe one way and the Libs believe another way.

We don't like more tax and we don't like big government and we love capitalism and small business and big business.

We are happy to help the poor, but within reason. Train the poor to fish.

We do not believe illegals should be rewarded for breaking the law and not their children either.

These are just a few things......other conservatives are free to have a different opinion of the conservative mindset.

Most of us are very passionate about what we believe. Maybe that comes off as kids in a schoolyard.

Sillystring,

Thanks for your considered response.

I understand we have our differences - labels don't help - I don't think we should be encouraging people to choose one camp or another. Our country would be healthier if we didn't force our politicians to the extremes on either end of the spectrum in my opinion.

I am (quite obviously) a liberal in the general sense of the word but in reality that doesn't make any sense. I have strong disagreements with many friends on some topics where those throwing the 'liberal' label around as a pejorative would like to believe we're all in lock step on.

- I firmly believe in means testing for all benefits for example
- I don't believe people should receive ever increasing benefits for having more and more babies
- I don't believe in blanket amnesty for illegal immigrants
- I believe in putting the jobless to work - offer training for those who need new skills and take benefits away for those not interested in getting a job
- etc

The politicians (and their backers) encourage people to believe it is black or white - that all liberals want more taxes and bigger government for example.

I am concerned our political process is broken and an ever more polarized electorate is only going to make that worse.

That's why I reacted to the suggestion by a poster here that someone not paying their bills is somehow a "liberal" concept.

UKMatt, you don't sound a bit "liberal" to me

I do understand what you are saying. People have pretty much already chosen their camps. obama blames the Republicans and the Republicans blame the Liberals. It is a never ending battle and worse now than it has ever been in the past.

There is no middle ground. Neither side is willing to compromise. The politicians (both sides) spinning every single event. Do they really believe we are totally ignorant people and don't know what they are doing? There is no personal accountability. It is always someone else's fault.

I am hoping with all my heart and every prayer I have, that Romney can honestly bring hope and change and be the great compromiser.

You cannot make any headway when you are constantly insulting the other side.

I am proud of being a liberal. The Republicans made this same stink when Medicare was being signed into law. I have never seen such negativity in my life!!! If there is something good for the country, conservatives will find something wrong with it, especially, if it has been put in place by a Democrat. Conservatives are negative, mean-spirited, hostile, angry, ill informed and listen to fairy tales told by the likes of Glen Beck, Rush, and O'Reilly. Yes, I am proud of being a liberal.

I am really glad you are proud of being a liberal and that you feel you are so superior to conservatives.

I find your comment disgusting!

I don't consider myself a conservative or liberal. I do have a lot more in common with conservatives but I vote on the issues and not party lines.

Right now it sounds like you are being negative, mean-spirited and hostile. You think conservatives are ill informed but yet they also think you are ill informed. I don't watch any of the people you mentioned I can't stand to listen to them. But if you listen to CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC you would notice they are very, very liberal in their thinking.

Because I disagree with you on every level sstonetx does not make me any of those things.

You have said yourself that your parents were conservatives and they pushed it down your throat. I think you are liberal in spite of your parents.

I don't know all the right answers but I can tell you that government run health care isn't right.

I will be so happy if he loses to Romney. There is no reason to keep him in office.

Oh texbuck, I know our King would not like my disapproval of him, but who cares! I hope there will be some smarter people in this country that wouldn't vote for him twice.

Oh and my ill-informed self really doesn't care to listen to Glen Beck or any other conservative personality. I have my principles and values and that's how I vote.
