Gambling on the ballot

Gambling on the ballot

They did have a referendum on the ballot, yesterday, that asked if I would support gambling in Texas if the money was earmarked for Texas. That is what we were sold when we got the lottery. Where did the lottery money go? Some people say in the general fund.

I would be for gambling in this state if it did not include Galveston. I am afraid that Galveston would turn into a Biloxi with all the casinos in the water and no seawall. So, for that reason, I voted no.

I much prefer seeing all the Texas money being spent in Louisiana like it is now. Louisiana and the different towns where the casinos are located receive a good deal of revenue from the casinos.

We go to Lake Charles and also to Biloxi to the Beau Rivage about three times a year and enjoy the Casino's. The L'Auberge Du Lac in Lake Charles parking lot is about 80% filled with Texas license plates, this state could use the revenue for schools. It's unbelievable how many states now have gambling:

they are opening a new L'auberge in Baton Rouge this Summer.

You are right, texbuck, the parking garage is full of Texas plates.

We could use that money for schools, roads, etc.

Biloxi has casinos, but it still had all the beautiful homes across from the waterfront. Not sure what the hurricanes did to those homes, but surely they have recovered by now.

The list of States with Casinos is not up to date. They recently opened a big one in downtown Cleveland, Ohio so add another state.

I forgot to say they wanted to earmark it for schools. But, would you be happy if they put casino's on the water in Galveston??? And, how can we be sure the money would go to schools?

Galveston would probably be thrilled for the revenue it would bring.

The state would have to designate where the money went. Schools, roads, whatever......

For once I am a liberal, I support casino gambling! I do set limits when I gamble and definately am not addicted to it.

I think it will bring more crime and cause more problems than its worth. I also think it will lead to more family issues.

They always use the children as a gateway to do this. People think if its for the children it must be good. Our schools are no better off today than they were before the lottery.

The Indian Reservations in Texas should be allowed to exercise their sovereignty and have gaming. That's money and jobs staying here.

I don't like that either, they should have to follow the same laws as the rest of us.

Just for the record I am 1/16th Indian, I think I am related to Elizabeth Warren. LOL

I have not seen the stats for Louisiana, but would be surprised if the crime rate has increased.

It can cause family issues and I have heard stories, but if a person wants to gamble recklessly, they will do it with or without a casino.

Have you ever been to a pawn shop in Shreveport? You would not believe the things people pawn. They put Pawn Stars to shame.

MRoss, see, we can agree on something. I am so wary of anyone telling us this will be earmarked for schools. As I said before, that was what the lottery was supposed to be for. I tried to find what they spend the lottery money on and it is nearly impossible to find. Since the politicians are hell bent on slashing school funding, I don't trust the intentions. It is just common sense that schools, firefighters and police ought to be funded......no brainer.

If people want to gamble let them go to Las Vegas. Gambling does not help the Indian Casinos. I saw that fist hand in MN, SD, and IA.
