These local hospitals are part of a "chain". These "chains" spend millions on advertisements for their non-profit organizations, yet they generate high revenues. Of course, there are many dedicated, intelligent healthcare professionals in this area and across Houston, and I applaud and appreciate their efforts. But it doesn't solve the main problem, which is the diversion away from science and a focus more towards annual earnings and running large corporations. Yes, educated patients that have the means to do it, go where the BEST of the best would be - whether it in a another state, or another country. Some of the best doctors in the world don't practice in this country. Many are in Europe and work at privately owned or university funded clinics and hospitals, where they don't have an "FDA" looking over their shoulders and have the freedom to teach and practice science (not business, as one of the other posts mentioned). The U.S. would already have stem cell therapy approved and a matter of general practice in helping cure many diseases (MS,MD, rheumatoid arthritis, included) as well as aid in bone and soft tissue injuries, but the drug company lobbyists and FDA pose a hurdle. Additionally, this therapy has already been successfully implemented with equine and bovine injuries. Last March, Rick Perry signed into state law a bill that the legislature created so that Mr. Perry himself could have access to stem cell treatment for his spinal injury. Up to that point, the use of adult stem cells for use in treatment of spinal disorders was illegal in Texas. In Rick Perry's case, the therapy was successful. There are only 10 physicians in the U.S. who employ this therapy, and one of them has his practice in Houston. His name is Dr. Stanley Jones (Mr. Perry's orthopedic surgeon).
