Zach La Canfora - TWHS Renaissance Man

[By Doug Sarant]

This week we are going to disprove the stereotype that most high school football players are dimwitted Neanderthal's. Or, from back in the day, Jocks.

The Woodlands High School two sport athlete, Zach La Canfora is far from dim and his life doesn't begin and end in the athletic arena. What drew us toward Zach to find out more about him was how humble he is. Zach is a star linebacker for the Highlanders as well as baseball player. Yet, you'll never see him talking about himself. Some people need how good they are verified and creatively search for ways to feel gratified. If La Canfora thinks he is good, you'd never know it. He just performs and performs very well. After a recent football game we could not cover because we were covering volleyball, I sent Zach a message asking how many tackles he had as well as his fellow linebacker, Jackson Shearer. Getting information from him about himself was like pulling teeth...Painful! However, he was happy to give Jackson credit for tons of tackles. Later, I heard Zach made 15 tackles. When I confronted him about it, he pointed out the opposing team was running to his side and whoever was playing on that side would have had just as many tackles. Yeah, sure Zach!

How long have you been playing football? How did you become interested in football? Did you play SCFL or some other youth league growing up?

I've been playing football since I was 6 years old...so 12 years. Ever since I was a toddler my dad always had some sort of game on the tv (mainly football or baseball) so I grew up watching and wanting to be like the players I watched. I played at SCFL all the way from when I was six, to the start of seventh grade. I made some memories I will never forget competing with all the local kids in The Woodlands area.

Describe the 2016 TWHS football team and why do you enjoy playing for the Highlanders?

Playing football at The Woodlands High School has been an experience I will remember for the rest of my life. All of us get along great and it's a fun environment. Our defense is really good this year and our offense just came off of an excellent performance at George Ranch.

Do you like TWHS and why?

I love The Woodlands High School...tons of spirit, and everyone gets along. I have made tons of new friends along the way.

What colleges are you looking into attending? Do you know what your field of study will be?

I'm still not sure if I will be doing athletics in college or not, but I'm interested in The University of Oklahoma.

What do you hope to be doing after you graduate from college?

Whether it be in the medical field or business, I'm hoping to be successful in whatever direction I head after college.

What do you enjoy doing away from school and football?

I play summer baseball which is really busy with all of the tournaments we travel to.

Your role model for football?

My role model for football is probably Brian Cushing because he gives it his all on the field and is a great off the field character.

Describe how supportive your family is in everything you do with your life.

My family has always been there for me in whatever I may be doing as they're my #1 supporters. They've helped me through a lot of things especially my sports, such as driving me to practices hours away and never complaining.

If you were given a million dollars and had to give it to one charity, which one would you choose and why?

If I had a million dollars I would give it to the Boys and Girls Club USA. Nothing is more important than the activities young people get involved in. The school curriculum is important and a necessity but to be able to play sports and do extra curricular activities shapes young people and makes them what they will become. The money would help in an effort so more and more kids could be afforded that opportunity.

Three things people don't know about you:

I love to snowboard and I've been going every year for the past seven years. I love to travel and have been to over 10 different countries. Like I pointed out before, school is a necessity and education is a must in our society. BUT, the real classroom is outside. If you really want to learn about the world, you travel. Last but not least, I'm afraid of sharks and I only want to be close to them when I'm reeling them in.

When is the last time you danced? Where? You any good?

The last time I danced was probably not too long ago. Anytime there's a good song on it's hard not to. I would say I'm not too bad of a dancer.

What is your favorite song in your phone now? Do you have a favorite group?

My favorite song on my phone right now would probably be Digits by Young Thug, I also like Travis Scott, Future, and Wiz.

Favorite movie of all time?

The Wolf of Wall Street.

Miesha Tate or GF Megan Watkins?

Ok that's too easy! I would have to take Megan. She always makes me laugh and isn't too bad looking.

La Canfora's position coach, Gary Madore talked about Zach:

"Well, Zach is one of those athletes who is very good at what he does, fairly quiet on and off the field and lets his leadership and play on the field speak volumes. Zach is a two year starter...All District player and down right tough to block! Zach is the QB for our defense, lining us up correctly with a wealth of knowledge and understanding of the 3-4 (3-4 defense). Zach...on the field for the Highlanders is like having a coach on the field."

A few weeks ago, Kim Sekula Hess championed a fulfilling National Suicide Awareness Week in which several activities were involved to include a huge Kickball tournament (CJH FOR HOPE) at Alden Bridge Sports Park. Among the teams was Kicks are for Kids which consisted of Woodlands High School students. Zach and his girlfriend, Megan helped organize the team as they were familiar with Kim's late daughter, Cassidy. When you want to find out about a person, you look to see who they surround themselves with. The circle of friends La Canfora runs with are as solid as he is on the football field.

Rarely do we include parents in our profiles but we are making an exception on this one because of how tight Zach is with his parents, Joseph (a pilot) and Cari (a 3rd grade teacher). The relationship these three share and the bond they have is amazing. I remember writing one time that in every child's life, there will be a few teenage years when the parents lose the child and the child no longer thinks his parents are awesome. I truly think this trio skipped that whole process.

So, there you have it...just another awesome example of the type of young people we have walking the halls of our buildings in the Conroe Independent School District.

Travel on, Zach!
