FYI Widening of Research Forest
At a recent Alden Bridge Village Association Meeting, Commissioner Riley spoke on his road improvement plans. Everyone should know about the TxDOT widening of FM 2978 to four lanes from the HC/MC County line to FM 1488. This project is underway and is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.
Precinct 2 plans to widen Research Forest to a full four lanes from Alden Bridge to Egypt. The project is in the design phase and he expects to have it done during the last half of 2017. I have received several questions regarding the forest area behind the houses on the south side of Research Forest from Alden Bridge to Egypt. The land to the north of Research from Branch Crossing to Egypt is not within The Woodlands.
I thought the area to the north was a 50 ft Township Open Space Forest Reserve (ROSR; not a utility easement). I was correct but it is actually 60 ft. SJRA has an easement for their ground water system to the north of our ROSR It is my understanding the SJRA pipe will run under the shoulder of the new east bound road
There is one area on Research adjacent to North Westwinds Circle where this reserve does not exist. This area is actually an undeveloped street called Lauralvale which was designed to cut through from West Alden Bridge to Research. Lauralvale was required by the City of Houston when they approved the plat for The Woodlands. The road has never been developed and is currently greenspace. The Township has never requested that the road right of way be abandoned for fear that Houston would wake up and require that it be built.
One other point, The new Del Webb development off 1488, estimated to be 515 homes, will cut a south road from their gated community to Research Forest sometime between 2018 and 2020. They have already acquired the needed access right of way.
This will probably bring more traffic onto Branch Crossing as right now many people view Woodlands Parkway as a faster way to get to the front of The Woodlands.

So glad they have added stoplights at Crownridge and Alden Bridge on Research, but does anyone know who to contact to ask why they haven't made only one lane go straight and one lane turn only (when it merges to one immediately after the light)? There are always a ton of people who think they have to race everyone to be one car ahead. It's a bad accident waiting to happen.

The developers are determined to use The Woodlands as access roads. Don't they have to plan this when they buy the land?

@sstonetx The people are trying to fight it, but eventually the developers will win.

@brookskd I am not sure who you would call, but you can probably call the township offices and they can direct you.

I am hoping that most of the work is done during non peak times. Traffic is already awful on 2978.

I'm glad that they put lights in at Crownridge and Alden bridge , but making it four lane? I see nothing but trouble. It is already a speedway , four lanes should make it worse , another Woodlands Parkway . I agree with you Plymouth, the developers will win. It does not matter to them if they make drainage problems ,and a strip mall for every plot of land. it's all about them. In a short time when people realize that we are another 1960, and start to move, the developers will be on to the next site.I used to think the Woodlands was great, but that was the woodlands that was George Mitchell's vision. Now it's a whole new ballgame.

Both fm2978 and Research are well traveled. I can't think of any main roads that aren't at least 4 lanes. It is a normal progression from 2 to 4. No surpriese there.

Making Woodlands Parkway 10 or more lanes being it is within a community seems destructive. They can expand fm1488 which has plenty of room to do so and have added the Grand Parkway, which should satisfy east west travel needs.

They need to widen 2978. It only has 1 lane in each direction. I would be interested in finding out how much the Grand Parkway has eased traffic conditions on other roads.
