I'd like someone to meet regarding cutting US purchases of oil from OPEC countries.

My perspective is conservative. I'm all for cutting production (as long as it won't stop me from eventually getting the $1.25/ gal. gas to which I am looking forward, however much I commiserate with all those oil patch workers [Thank goodness! I'm not one!] who will lose their jobs without it. )

It isn't just the oil industry being hurt. The trickle down effect touches many other areas, home builders being one, as people have to bail out of mortgages, glutting the real estate market. You are lucky to be in an industry that isn't part of that trickle down.

@Frankie :

True. However, the pain that the oil patch has to bear is nothing in comparison to the blessing that every area of the country that is not involved in the oil patch is experiencing. Places like the Northeast are positively jubilant.

Nonetheless, I hope that the mere fact that that they will have to take their kids out of private school, that their jobs/businesses evaporate, or that they lose their homes, will cause the social Darwinists on this board to backtrack on their advocacy of noninterference of government in the marketplace.

Poverty is good for the character!

Hate to break the news to you but oil people are just like the rest of you. No everyone puts their kids in private schools, has gated mansions, and multiple vacation homes! We work hard, move where we have to in order to keep our jobs, and pay taxes! In addition, we are volunteers in the communities and schools. Because we have moved numerous times and lived in diverse cultures, we have experienced "other governments". Try a bit of socialized medicine... Enjoy working and giving everything to the government.... Have the prices gone down in the grocery stores or in any of the department stores? Did your electric bill go down significantly? Don't think so!
Instead of slamming hard working people, think about the new 10 dollar per gallon tax that is being proposed. Also consider that a good portion of what you are currently paying at the pump is tax!
If poverty is good for the character, let's talk about all of the philanthropy and donations given in the communities in our area because of the evil oil people. Do you think that Interfaith, CASA, PACN, the Women's shelter, and United Way do not benefit from the donations of the likes of Anadarko, Exxon, and others at the corporate levels as well as the employeeS!

[T]hink about the new 10 dollar per gallon tax that is being proposed

@cabeuser :

I hope that this is a typo and you don't actually believe that President Obama proposed a $10-per-gallon tax. It's actually $10-per-barrel.

Oil is pretty much one of the last things that the U.S. actually produces. Manufacturing jobs across the country have gone away. The latest is in Indianapolis, where Carrier decided to lay off 1400 and make its products in Monterrey, Mexico using $6/hr labor. So, it's not really true that we're the only ones that can learn so much from poverty. Bernie Sanders referred to this in the last democrat debate, only his purpose was to say that we need to "take care of" these workers. It's hard for me to imagine how we can do that though with so many workers not actually "working".

@cabeuser very well said! The misperception of the hard working people in the oil industry and the sacrifices they have to make. Thank you!
