So last night we had to make an ER visit for my 23 month old. He decided it would be fun to hold onto the garage door as it went up and hang there. He usually waits for it to open and then stands at the edge of the garage door yelling hi to everyone even if nobody is out. I put the diaper bag in the car and when I looked up he was hanging. My natural reaction was to scream and when I did he looked at me and let go. Thank God he fell on his bottom but he cried when he walked and couldn't bend over. He is just bruised but never in a million years did I think that would ever happen. My daughter is scared of heights and never would have done that. Thought I would share so some other parent could be aware. I wish the garage doors had a safety feature when 20 lbs of weight was pulled it would stop.

He hasn't woken up yet this morning but I imagine he will be sore. Ibuprofen around the clock for a few days.

How scary. I am so glad he is okay. Thanks for the important warning--you can never anticipate what kind of danger toddlers can get in to.

That sounds very scary. Overhead garage door can be very dangerous so only open and close the door when the kids are in the car or in the house. Hope your little one gets to feeling better.

Count your blessings, my neighbor had her door collapse onto her car as she was pulling out of the garage, what a mess! I sure hope your little one will be fine!

Thanks everyone. He seems fine this morning. No bruising on his bum. He is moving a little slower but that is a good thing considering he runs everywhere. He was ready to hold hands before we even.went out to the garage this morning. Yes, opening the garage after they are in the car is an awesome idea.

That sounds like the garage door torsion spring broke. Most only last 7 – 10 years depending on how many times you open/close the door.

Scary... I would never have thought that a garage door could hold that much weight!

Garage doors themselves weigh several hundred pounds. The torsion spring does most of the work of lifting the heavy door so adding 20-30 pounds is nothing when compared to the overall weight of the door itself.
