I'm sure there are side effects to my blood pressure meds, cholestrol meds, stop smoking meds that I am already taking, but I have never looked them up and I would rather stay ignorant of the side effects.
Some of the side effects sound terrible, but when you think that you are putting chemicals strong enough to change things in your body, it makes sense that they have some other effects beyond the intended ones. I guess you just have to weigh the risks/benefits as someone else said.
The warning always make the side effects sound worse than most of the illness they are being prescribed for. The pharmaceutical companies probably go out of their way to protect themselves.
The idea of the commercials is to get people to pressure their doctors to give them the meds. However, as has been mentioned, the side effects could really keep me from asking my doctor for them. However, they would't spend that kind of advertising money if it didn't work.
