Very easy to teach them tricks, plus they love to play ball and frisbee, even at 10 ours has a lot of energy. Our first sheltie lived to be 17 yo. It is not uncomm for them to live into the mid teens.

I have a lot of friends who are buying Shelties. They must be a good dog. I have to stick to dogs that do not shed as that makes my allergies nuts.

I guess we have been lucky. We have a sheltie and she travels with us to most places we go, unless it is by plane, then we board her with our vet.

We don't have any pets, but would love a puppy. Since we didn't have one before my son was born, I am afraid that we probably should wait a few more years until he is a little older. I am not sure he would be great with a new pet right now. When we do get one, my husband and I would LOVE a Sheltie. Is there a local breeder? How are they with young children?

Ours will be 10 on 3/29. I don't know of any breeders around here, ours was from a breeder in Nacogdoches and parents just got one from a breeder in Oklahoma City.

We love shelties. We had them growing up so I have been around them most of my life. For the most part they are good family dogs and are full of energy. Some can be a little 'wilder' than others. We did a two month weekly training session with our current sheltie when she was about 6 month old and she is VERY well behaved. They have a double coat of fur and do require a lot of brushing/grooming. We had our dog before kids, so we have never had an issue between the kids and the dog. My 4 yo daughter likes to play with the dog and the dog basically will let her do anything with out getting upset. Some shelties can be 'aloof' or can become destructive if not given attention, but for the most part we are very happy with the breed.
