The Montgomery County Women's Center
became an autonomous, locally-governed agency on January 1, 1987, after the merger of the
Family Violence Outreach (FVO Advisory Committee, a satellite of the Houston Area Women's
Center) and the Montgomery County Rape Crisis Coalition.
FVO had been providing non-residential counseling
services, a family violence hotline, education and emergency shelter in hotels since 1982.
A formal Shelter for Abused Women was opened in the summer of 1985.
The Rape Crisis Coalition had provided voluntary
education and advocacy since 1980. In the fall of 1986 a formal program was organized and
a staff member hired to provide a 24-hour crisis hotline, accompaniment for the victim
through the medical and criminal justice processes and education and advocacy on issues
around sexual assault.
The Montgomery County Women's Center receives
funding from the United
Way of Montgomery County, government grants or contracts, local contributions and
fundraising efforts. The Women's Center 1998 budget is approximately $625,000. Services
are provided in six locations to victims of family violence and sexual assault or abuse in
Montgomery, north Harris, and northwest Liberty counties. These offices include: The
Shelter for Battered Women and their children, at a non-published location; the main
business office in the Woodlands; the Conroe Counseling offices; and three small outreach
counseling offices in New Caney, Cleveland, and Montgomery.
Currently, the Women's Center provides face-to-face
couseling, safe shelter and legal advocacy to over 1,200 adults and children each year.
Approximately 550 of these individuals have been sexually assaulted or abused.
The Women's Center is the only source of counseling
and shelter, free of charge, for most of these clients.
The Womens Center participates in
shopper programs sponsored by Randalls and Kroger. By using a card during check out,
Montgomery County Women's Center receives a percentage of the shppers purchase. The
program is of no additional cost to the shopper and is of great benefit to the
Womens Center. To receive grocery cards, please call the Womens Center at
